Biden says ‘hate can be given no safe harbor’ as he signs anti-Asian hate crimes billEmphasizing that "we are committed to stop the hatred and the bias," President Joe Biden on Thursday signed into law a bipartisan bill

that would speed the review of hate crimes and make it easier to aid in their reporting. The president spoke before signing the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act, a measure that overwhelming passed both houses of Congress and which was spurred by the reported surge in anti-Asian hate crimes amid the coronavirus pandemic, which originated in China before sweeping the globe. Repeating a line that he’s often used, Biden said that "hate can be given no safe harbor in America." And he emphasized that "right now, this is a critical problem, hate crimes being under reported."The new law aims to tackle that problem by creating a new Justice Department position to expediate the review of potential COVID-19-related hate crimes which are reported to federal, state, or local authorities. And it will expand efforts to make the reporting of hate crimes more accessible at the local and state levels. Vice President Kamala Harris, the nation’s first female, Black, and Asian American vice president, highlighted that "this bill brings us one step closer to stopping hate, not only for Asian Americans but for all Americans." NYPD INVESTIGATING HATE CRIME ATTACK ON ASIAN MAN And Biden pledged that "with this new law, the Department of Justice and this entire administration is going to step up." Preaching bipartisanship in a nation extremely divided along partisan lines, the president noted that "I believe with every fiber in my being that there are simple, core, values and beliefs that should bring us together as Americans. One of them is standing together against hate, against racism, the ugly poison that has long haunted and plagued our nation." And pointing to the bipartisan audience at the White House bill signing ceremony, Biden said "you’ve taken that first step, that important step." POLICE IN CALIFORNIA MAKE ARRESTS IN ROBBERY OF ELDERLY ASIAN MAN The measure passed the Senate 94-1 last month before sailing through the House this week by a 364-62 vote. "I’m proud today of the United States. I’m proud today of our political system, the United States Congress. I’m proud today that Democrats and Republicans have stood up together to say something," Biden emphasized. And Biden, who made a pledge to work with Republicans a pillar of his 2020 campaign for the presidency, praised the lawmakers from both parties who spearheaded the bill for "showing that our democracy can work and deliver for the American people." But the president, raising his voice, warned that "every time we let hate flourish, we make a lie of who we are as a nation." He urged that "we cannot let the very foundation of this country continue to be eaten away" and said that "I look at this law that you passed as maybe the first break, the first significant break in a moment in our history that has to be turned around." Harris, speaking ahead of the president, acknowledged that with the bill signing, "our work will not be done. Here is the truth. Racism exists in America. Xenophobia exists in America. Anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, homophobia, transphobia, it all exists. And so the work to address injustice, wherever it exists, remains the work ahead."

House Intel Republicans urge ‘more pressure on China,’ claiming evidence suggests Wuhan lab leak

Good morning and welcome to Fox News First. Here's what you need to know as you start your day … House Intel Republicans urge ‘more pressure on China,’ claiming evidence suggests Wuhan lab leak EXCLUSIVE: Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee say there is "significant circumstantial evidence" that the coronavirus outbreak stemmed from a leak at China's Wuhan Institute of Virology. The lawmakers urged the federal government to put "more pressure on China" to allow for a "full, credible investigation" into the source of the global pandemic. Committee Ranking Member Devin Nunes, R-Calif., and Republicans on the panel released a report Wednesday, first obtained by Fox News, saying it was "crucial for health experts and the U.S. government to understand how the COVID-19 virus originated" to prevent "or quickly mitigate future pandemics." Republicans pointed to China’s "history of research lab leaks resulting in infections," and warnings from U.S. diplomats in China as early as 2017 that the Wuhan lab was conducting "dangerous research" on coronaviruses without following "necessary safety protocols, risking the accidental outbreak of a pandemic." Republicans also pointed to public reports that "several researchers in the Wuhan lab were sickened with COVID-19-like symptoms" in Fall 2019, and the Chinese military’s "involvement in the Wuhan Lab." Gretchen Whitmer to notify lawmakers when she plans to travel out of the state The bill follows Whitmer’s controversial $27,521 Florida trip in March when she visited her ailing father but initially refused to give details about the trip. Bobby Leddy, the governor’s press secretary, claimed the legislation was politically motivated. "It would behoove the Legislature to read the Michigan Constitution, which clearly outlines a process to ensure that there is always an acting governor available to continue the functions of the state in case of an emergency," he said, according to the Detroit Free Press. "If the Legislature wants to waste their time playing games, that’s their own decision, but Gov. Whitmer is going to remain focused on ending this pandemic and putting Michigan back to work." US Navy seizes weapons in Arabian Sea likely bound for Yemen

The U.S. Navy announced Sunday it seized an arms shipment of thousands of assault weapons, machines guns and sniper rifles hidden aboard a ship in the Arabian Sea, apparently bound for Yemen to support the country's Houthi rebels. An American defense official told The Associated Press that the Navy's initial investigation found the vessel came from Iran, again tying the Islamic Republic to arming the Houthis despite a United Nations arms embargo. Iran's mission to the U.N. did not immediately respond to a request for comment, though Tehran has denied in the past giving the rebels weapons. The seizure, one of several amid the yearslong war in Yemen, comes as the U.S. and others try to end a conflict that spawned one of the world's worst humanitarian disasters. The arms shipment, described as sizeable, shows that the war may still have far to run. (U.S. Navy via AP) FLORIDA DENTAL HYGIENIST FOUND GUILTY IN COLD-CASE KILLING OF NAVY RECRUIT The guided-missile cruiser USS Monterey discovered the weapons aboard what the Navy described as a stateless dhow, a traditional Mideast sailing ship, in an operation that began Thursday in the northern reaches of the Arabian Sea off Oman and Pakistan. Sailors boarded the vessel and found the weapons, most wrapped in green plastic, below deck. When laid out on the deck of the Monterey, the scale of the find came into focus. Sailors found nearly 3,000 Chinese Type 56 assault rifles, a variant of the Kalashnikov. They recovered hundreds of other heavy machine guns and sniper rifles, as well as dozens of advanced, Russian-made anti-tank guided missiles. The shipments also included several hundred rocket-propelled grenade launchers and optical sights for weapons. The Navy's Mideast-based 5th Fleet did not identify where the weapons originated, nor where they were going. However, an American defense official said the weapons resembled those of other shipments interdicted bounded for the Houthis. Based on interviews with the crew and material investigated on board, the sailors determined the vessel came from Iran, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing investigation. "After all illicit cargo was removed, the dhow was assessed for seaworthiness, and after questioning, its crew was provided food and water before being released," the 5th Fleet said in a statement. The seizures began in 2016 and have continued intermittently throughout the war, which has seen the Houthis fire ballistic missiles and use drones later linked to Iran. Yemen is awash with small arms that have been smuggled into poorly controlled ports over years of conflict. This recent seizure appeared to be among the biggest. Tim Michetti, an investigative researcher who studies the illicit weapon trade, also said the shipment bore similarities to the others. "The unique blend of materiel recovered by the USS Monterey appears to be consistent with the materiel from previous interdictions, which have been linked to Iran," he said. Yemen’s war began in September 2014, when the Houthis seized Sanaa and began a march south to try to seize the entire country. Saudi Arabia, along with the United Arab Emirates and other countries, entered the war alongside Yemen’s internationally recognized government in March 2015. Iran backed the Houthis, who harass Saudi Arabia with missile fire and drone attacks. CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP The war has killed some 130,000 people, including over 13,000 civilians slain in targeted attacks, according to the Armed Conflict Location & Event Project. The war has seen atrocities from all sides. Saudi airstrikes using American-made bombs killed school children and civilians. The UAE paid off local al-Qaida fighters to avoid fighting and controlled prisons where torture and sexual abuse was rampant. The Houthis employ child soldiers and indiscriminately lay landmines. Since 2015, the U.N. Security Council has imposed an arms embargo on the Houthis. Despite that, U.N. experts warn "an increasing body of evidence suggests that individuals or entities in the Islamic Republic of Iran supply significant volumes of weapons and components to the Houthis."

Two Royal Navy vessels were sent to deal with a possible blockade of St Helier and France responded by dispatching two patrol vessels of its own. Volunteers provide last resort help in India | DW News

India recorded 382,315 new infections on Wednesday, according to health ministry data, a day after India reached a grim milestone of becoming the second country to cross 20 million infections. According to the World Health Organization, India accounted for one in four deaths across the world over the last week. The country also reported 46% of the global cases in the past week. As the ferocious second wave continues to batter its healthcare system, a persistent shortage of oxygen is making matters worse. In the capital, many hospitals are taking to Twitter to seek help, and turning away patients over erratic supplies. For weeks now, volunteer groups have been stepping in to fight this oxygen crisis.

India's COVID advisors say Modi government 'ignored' their warnings | DW News

In India, a group of scientists advising the Narendra Modi government on the coronavirus says it warned of a new and more dangerous virus variant back in March, but that the government ignored their warnings. An international relief effort to help India deal with its devastating second wave of COVID-19 infections is gathering pace. Countries ranging from Germany and France to Taiwan and Russia are sending aid. But India's vaccine roll-out is being hampered by a shortage of shots, and new cases and deaths are still hitting record levels. People lie in the corridors of a hospital in Madhya Pradesh. Those with a bed are hardly better off without oxygen. Relatives can only watch as their loved ones run out of breath. Precious oxygen is delivered to a hospital in Delhi under police escort. But it comes too late. Eight people died waiting. Medical supplies are flying in. From Germany, ventilators. And from Russia, vaccines. Once a vaccine exporter, India is now desperate for imports. Several states have run out of vaccines, even as the inoculation campaign expands to all adults. Those who wait to get a shot know they're the lucky ones. Sikh devotees in Punjab cram together in a shrine. Religious gatherings have been partly blamed for India's coronavirus outbreak. Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined the crowds. Some Indians blame his leadership for the crisis. Across India, anger burns like so many funeral pyres.
